I just finished reading Prismatic by Sarah Elle Emm and man did I enjoy it. This is a Young Adult novel that follows the main character Rain as she navigates through the year 2050 where the world has taken a turn for the worst. The United States is being governed by a ruthless dictator/slash president named Elizabeth Nicks who has divided the nation into zones called the United States of The Authority, segregating people by race. But the caveat to the story is that one section is for mixed races only. The main character Rain, is the child of a mixed couple and she has learned to adjust to the harsh reality of the times. Four years after being moved to the mixed zone, she struggles to find peace and eventually meets a young boy named Jabari, sparking a romance that feeds the story as they dream of a place of freedom and sovereignty. Rain, along with a small band of teens calling themselves the Freedom Fighters, have vowed to overthrow “Tricky Nicky” and free themselves from a life of desolation and hate. Prismatic means brightly colored; iridescent, and this story shines. The characters come to life in full color and the emotional ups and down of being a teenager at a time of chaos and confusion glimmers to the surface. My one critique of Prismatic would be that it lacks the amount of action that I crave for in a story. The tension of certain doom is present, but the elements never bubble over to the point that you fear for their lives. Hopefully, the sequel, Opalescent (which is out now) will up the ante. I liked this book, which is a nice change of pace from the other Dystopian YA novels out there. I recommend you give it a try. I give it a 4/5.
